Home of Dewi Danu, the goddess
of the crater lake, lake Batur is especially
sacred to the Balinese. Although
it has no river outlets, the water from the
lake, generated by eleven springs are believed
to percolate through the earth and reappear
as springs in other parts of the island. Situated
500m below the crater rim, lake Batur is the
largest lake in Bali, 8km long and 3km wide,
and the one of the most glorious, the village
dotted around its shores are referred to as
Bintang Danu (star of lake). The most popular
road to the lake site served by public bemo,
leaves the crater rim at Penelokan. Bemos, in
theory, go as far as Songan on the western side
of the lake and Abang on the eastern side, but
you'll have to bargain hard to get reasonable
fares beyond Toya Bungkah.
