The second largest Balinese city
after Denpasar, Singaraja has an airy
spaciousness created by its broad avenues, impressive
monuments and colonial bungalows set in attractive
gardens. With a population of over 100,000,
it's home to an interesting ethnic mix of Balinese,
Muslim and Chinese. Behind the old harbour you
can still see the shophouses and narrow streets
of the original trading area, and most of the
descendants of these earlier traders still live
nearby, Jalan Hassanudin is known locally as
Kampong Bugis and Jalan Imam Bonjol as Kampoeng
Arab.
As the travel hub for the north
of the island, you're bound to pass through
Singaraja on your way to or from Lovina, though
most tourists head straight out again. It isn't
a great place to stay and there aren't many
sights, but you can easily spend a few interesting
hours exploring this pleasant and tourist-friendly
Balinese town.
